Abstract

Introduction: Malignant ovarian neoplasms represent a relevant public health problem, characterized by high mortality, frequent late diagnosis, and marked regional inequalities, reinforcing the need for epidemiological and spatial analyses in Brazil. Objective: To analyze the spatial distribution and epidemiological profile of mortality from malignant ovarian neoplasms in Brazilian municipalities between 2001 and 2021. Methods: This was a descriptive observational epidemiological study with spatial analysis that, included female deaths from malignant ovarian neoplasms classified according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) code C56, recorded in Brazil between 2001 and 2021. Data were obtained from the Brazilian Mortality Information System and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics to calculate crude and age-standardized municipal mortality rates. Sociodemographic variables and characteristics of deaths were evaluated. Temporal trends were analyzed using the Joinpoint Regression Program, while spatial analyses were performed in GeoDa, with the construction of thematic maps, local empirical Bayesian smoothing, and identification of spatial clusters using the global and local Moran indices. Results: During the study period, 65,150 deaths from malignant ovarian neoplasms were recorded in Brazil. Mortality was highest among women aged 60–69 years (25.07%), predominantly white (61.78%) and married (36.38%). A heterogeneous spatial distribution was observed, with higher mortality rates concentrated in the South and Southeast regions and foci of higher mortality in the Northeast. Conclusion: Spatial clusters and municipalities with high mortality from malignant ovarian neoplasms were identified, underscoring the need for region-specific strategies to address local disparities.
